Old Foes Get Rolling

Are India and Pakistan on the road to friendlier relations? Last Friday, the two nations started a bus service that will carry passengers back and forth across their shared border.

At a ceremony to launch the joint venture, India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh, asked Pakistan to join India in a "treaty of peace, security and friendship" after nearly 60 tense years. The nations have fought three wars, two of them over control of the mountainous Kashmir region that they share.

Pakistan welcomed the offer, and expressed the need for "bold and sincere steps" to resolve the Kashmir dispute. It won't be easy. World leaders want Pakistan and India to resolve their conflict peacefully. Both nations have deadly nuclear weapons. Singh's gesture seemed a step in the right direction on the long road to peace.
