TFK Q&A

WHO: "Andrew Revkin

CLAIM TO FAME: New York Times reporter and author of the new book, The North Pole Was Here. Read more about his adventures at timeforkids.com/revkin.

Q How many times have you visited the Arctic?

A I've been to the Arctic three times. In April 2003, I went with a team of scientists who are studying global warming.

Q Did you see any signs of global warming?

A The evidence is not something you would see in one visit. You have to study the region year after year and watch for changes that don't appear to be part of the natural cycles of melting and freezing. That is what scientists feel they are seeing now.

Q What hardships did you encounter?

A The air was typically -15°F. Taking notes in such conditions was tough. The ink in pens freezes. The endless light made it nearly impossible to sleep.

Q What is your most enduring image of the Arctic?

A There were a lot of strange and wonderful moments. But the empty, flat, icy whiteness stretching to every horizon stunned me each time I remembered I was standing on an ocean.
