Renee Hagerty, Lake Erie, Ohio
Four years ago, Renee Hagerty, 14, learned that used batteries were killing Lake Erie. She started Battery Buddies, a campaign that promotes battery recycling. Soon, the entire community of Elyria, Ohio, and every school in the area were pitching in. The group has collected almost 9,000 pounds of batteries. "Anyone can do it," she told TFK. "It's simple recycling."
