Migratory Bird Watch
Each spring, billions of birds journey from their winter homes to summer nesting areas. On May 13, International Migratory Bird Day, bird lovers will celebrate the migration, or yearly movement.
This year, the event's spotlight is on the Boreal Forest of North America, one of the world's largest unspoiled forests. It stretches from Newfoundland, in Canada, to Alaska. This forest is a nesting ground for billions of birds belonging to more than 300 species in North, Central and South America.
Logging and development threaten the forest. Marilyn Heiman, the director of the Boreal Songbird Initiative, says the best way to save the forest is to conserve resources. "Turn off lights you don't need and take a bike or bus instead of a car," she told TFK.
