A New Feathered Friend

A sharp-eyed birdwatcher in India has made a rare discovery. Ramana Athreya spotted a brand-new species of bird at Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in northeastern India.

Last May, Athreya studied the bird up close. Athreya's research helped scientists identify the bird as a new species. The results were published in the latest issue of the journal Indian Birds.

Athreya named the bird Bugun Liocichla, for the Bugun tribe that lives at the edge of Eaglenest sanctuary. This is the first new bird species found in India in more than 50 years. Scientists know of only 14 of the birds in the area. Athreya and a team of researchers aim to find more. Athreya told TFK, "It makes me think of all the other less distinctive species--butterflies, reptiles, insects, plants--which are waiting to be discovered!"
