A Global Gathering
World leaders met at United Nations headquarters in New York City last week. It was the 61st session of the General Assembly, a group made up of representatives from the 192 countries in the U.N. Topics included strategies for easing unrest in the Middle East and ways to strengthen economic development in the world's poorest countries.
President George W. Bush spoke about Iraq and his hopes that the U.N. can reach an agreement with Iran about its plan to develop nuclear power. Iran's president defended his plans and criticized the United States, as did Venezuela's president. Both men grabbed headlines when they insulted President Bush.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan has served for 10 years in the U.N.'s top post. He will retire at the end of this year. In an emotional farewell speech, he told the delegates, "The only answer to this divided world must be a truly United Nations."
