Incoming! A New Military Boss
President George W. Bush announced last week that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, 74, would resign after nearly six years.
"Secretary Rumsfeld and I agreed that sometimes it's necessary to have a fresh perspective," Bush said last Wednesday. The President nominated Robert Gates, a former chief of the Central Intelligence Agency, to replace Rumsfeld.
Some saw the resignation as an outcome of the Democrats' success in last week's election. Many voters were unhappy with progress in the Iraq war, which Defense oversees. Bush insisted that Rumsfeld's plan to resign was in place before Election Day.
