Pope Benedict XVI Visits Turkey
Last week, Pope Benedict XVI stopped to pray at the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. It was a historic moment. Only one other Pope has visited a Muslim place of worship. During his four-day trip, the Roman Catholic leader reached out to Muslims, the followers of Islam. Most of Turkey's 70 million people are Muslim. Protesters gathered before the Pope's visit. He had angered Muslims with comments he made in a speech in September.
The Pope met with top officials. He reached out to the nation's Christians. He hopes to mend the rift between the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Christians. He also urged Europe to support Turkey's bid to join the European Union.
