43 Years Ago in Time

In 1963, African Americans stepped up the fight to gain equality. That April, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for taking part in a protest in Birmingham, Alabama. Four months later, he delivered his moving “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington, a historic rally. That year, King was chosen TIME’s Man of the Year.

“Some 200,000 strong, whites and blacks of all ages walked from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. There the [black] leader spoke. . . . It was King . . . whom those present, as well as millions who watched on television, would remember longest.”
