A Big Beef Over Burgers
Who invented the hamburger sandwich? Three states are embroiled in a meaty battle over those bragging rights.
Last week, in a rare move, Texas lawmaker Betty Brown introduced a bill in the state legislature declaring Athens, Texas, the original home of the burger.
Wisconsin state representative Tom Nelson claims that Seymour, Wisconsin, home of the Hamburger Hall of Fame, is where the first American burger was grilled. But Mayor John DeStefano Jr., of New Haven, Connecticut, insists Louis' Lunch, a 112-year-old eatery in his city, is the official birthplace.
"It is a well-known and established fact that New Haven is the home of the hamburger," he says. Will these officials ever settle their beef?
