Finders Keepers
On New Year's Eve, Gary Dunlap, of Jefferson, Arkansas, found a 2.37-carat white diamond in the rough.
The treasure hunter hit pay dirt at the Crater of Diamonds State Park, in Murfreesboro, Arkansas. The park allows visitors to search for and keep any diamonds they find. "It was just pure luck that I found it," Dunlap told TFK. "They had just plowed the field and it had rained really hard all day. It was sitting right on top of the ground."
Dunlap named the gem Star of Thelma, in honor of his wife. About 25,000 diamonds have been found in the park since 1972. Dunlap's was the fourth-largest found in 2006.
