A Sad Finish

The racehorse Barbaro lost his brave fight for survival on January 29. Doctors put him to sleep so that he would not suffer pain. The colt won fans when he galloped to victory in the Kentucky Derby last May. Two weeks later, he shattered his leg at the start of the Preakness Stakes, and captured the nation's heart.

Barbaro underwent surgery for five hours to repair the leg. The operation was a success, but the eight-month-long recovery was like a roller-coaster ride. Each time he suffered a setback, Barbaro fought back like a champion. Well-wishers sent him cards, gifts and goodies. "I thought many times that he was going to make it, absolutely," said Barbaro's devoted surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson.
