Change For a Dollar
Hundreds of people lined up at Grand Central Terminal in New York City on February 15. They weren't at the railroad station to catch a train. They were there to trade in old dollar bills for the new George Washington Presidential $1 coin.
The coin is the first in a new series issued by the U.S. Mint that honors former U.S. Presidents. The Mint will release four $1 coins each year through 2016. They will come out in the order in which the Presidents served. The George Washington coin will be followed by John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison coins later this year.
The coins are the same size and color as the Sacagawea dollar. But for the first time since the 1930s, there is an inscription on the coin's edge. It includes the year of issue and two U.S. mottoes: "In God we trust" and "E pluribus unum," which means "out of many, one."
The coins aren't just for collectors. "Americans will soon be receiving Presidential $1 coins in their change and will find them convenient to use at retailers, car washes and vending machines," says Mint director Edmund Moy. To prove his point, he placed a shiny new $1 coin in a New York City parking meter.
