More than Enough E-waste
Every year, Americans throw out 20 million computers and 130 million cell phones. The U.N. says our wired world produces up to 50 million tons of electronic waste, or e-waste, annually.
E-waste often ends up in China, India or Nigeria, where workers recycle what they can. The rest is dumped or burned, which harms the environment.
Now, people are trying to reduce e-waste. Many European countries have signed treaties to ban exporting toxic trash. In the U.S., states have passed laws against dumping e-waste. Computer companies are promoting recycling. "It's the right thing to do for our customers," says Dell Computers' chief, Michael Dell. "It's the right thing to do for our Earth."
