A Vow to Stamp Out Malaria
Last Wednesday, President George W. Bush danced and had a little fun. At the same time, he made an important pledge to help wipe out malaria. The disease kills about 1 million people each year. Most of them live in Africa and are under the age of 5.
The White House event was the first time the U.S. took part in Malaria Awareness Day.
In 2005, Bush created the President's Malaria Initiative. The $1.2 billion five-year program provides lifesaving medicines and bed nets to millions of people in Africa. "Defeating malaria is going to be a challenge," says Bush. "But it's not going to require a miracle." You can help. Go to Found: A Rain Forest in Illinois
