Heavy Rains Pound Several States

A strong storm system soaked parts of the Midwest and Southwest last week. The deluge caused dangerous mudslides and severe flooding. At least 26 people were killed. The storms pummeled Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Oklahoma and parts of Texas.

In Fillmore County, Minnesota, "some people had to cut holes in their roofs to get out," says Jack O'Donnell, a chief deputy sheriff.

More than 10 inches of rain fell in Ohio. Floodwaters shut down highways. About 100 people had to be rescued from their homes by boat. Officials say this is the worst flooding in the area in more than 25 years.

To the dismay of the waterlogged states, forecasters predicted more rain for late last week.
