Still on the Road to Recovery
August 29 was the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst natural disasters in United States history. More than 1,600 people died. Most of New Orleans, Louisiana, was left underwater.
Bells rang across New Orleans last Wednesday. "We ring the bells for a city that is in recovery, that is struggling, that is performing miracles on a daily basis," said Ray Nagin, the city's mayor.
Although New Orleans has seen some renewal, it is still not on its feet. Only 83 of its 128 schools have reopened.
Last week, President Bush visited the region. The federal government has given some funds to help rebuild the flood walls around New Orleans, which need to be stronger.
"We will do what it takes," Bush said. "This great city will rise again."
