World Cup Showdown
The U.S. women's national soccer team moved one step closer to a big goal last week. The team defeated Nigeria 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Women's World Cup, held in China.
The first Women's World Cup kicked off in China in 1991. Since then, it has been held every four years. Americans won in 1991 and 1999.
With a typhoon looming and rain pouring into Hongkou Stadium, in Shanghai, the U.S. team was quick to strike against Nigeria. Infielder Lori Chalupny netted the match's only goal, after just 57 seconds. "That goal, being my first World Cup goal, was an amazing feeling," she said.
Several strong teams are vying for the cup. The final match is set for September 30.
