Danger Zones

Tainted drinking water, soot-filled skies, treeless landscapes: These are the products of pollution. Millions of people around the world are regularly exposed to dangerous levels of industrial pollution. The Blacksmith Institute, a New York City-based environmental group, is trying to change that. Last month, the group released its second annual list of the world's 10 most polluted places.

More than 12 million people live in the 10 cities. Pollution is a direct threat to their health. But solutions exist. Blacksmith is working on 42 cleanup projects in 12 countries. "Here in the U.S., we forget that ordinary pollution is still something that destroys a lot of lives," says Richard Fuller, the president of Blacksmith. "We need to do something about it."
