A Nobel Achievement
Since 1901, scientists and scholars have been honored with Nobel Prizes for their outstanding achievements. The prize is named for the Swedish inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel.
The 2007 winners were announced last week. American citizens Mario Capecchi and Oliver Smithies and Britain's Martin J. Evans won for their work in medicine. The trio's discoveries about genes are being used to find cures for diseases.
Albert Fert of France and Peter Gr,nberg of Germany won for physics. Their work allows information to be stored on very small devices. "You would not have an iPod without this effect," says Borje Johansson, a prize committee member.
British author Doris Lessing won the award for literature.
