Recent history: From 1926 to 1973, kings ruled. Civil war broke out in the 1970s. The Soviet Union invaded in 1979 and stayed for 10 years. In 1996, the Taliban took control. After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the United States led military strikes against the Taliban. Its leaders refused to hand over the suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden.
