World on a String

Yo-yo Champ Yuuki Spencer, 18, looked all wound up at the National Yo-Yo Contest in Chico, California, on October 6. But his spinning yo-yo was just part of the act. Players in the competition's top division perform intricate string tricks, with a technique called "sleeping." Spencer, who holds the 2007 national and world titles, has been at the top of the game since 2002. "He is a creative, lively, popular yo-yo player," Bob Malowney, the contest's director, told TFK.
