More Space For the Station
On October 23, the space shuttle Discovery set out to deliver a little Harmony to the International Space Station (ISS). The crew will install a connector module called Harmony to the ISS. It will serve as a hub for the scientific labs on the space station.
The mission's commander, Pamela A. Melroy, is the second woman to lead a space shuttle. "This is a pretty complex assembly mission," said Melroy in a preflight interview. "But on a personal level, it's very exciting, because when you approach the space station, it's an extraordinary sight."
The crew will also move the P6 solar array, which supplies electricity to parts of the ISS. Along for the ride, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Wars, is a light saber that was used in the movie. May the Force be with these astronauts!
