A Country in Turmoil
A wave of violence erupted across the African nation of Kenya last week. Mobs protesting the outcome of the December 27 presidential election set buildings on fire. More than 300 people were killed and tens of thousands fled the country during the riots. Tribal groups supporting different candidates are doing much of the fighting. The violence began after Mwai Kibaki was sworn in for his second term as president. Opposition candidate Raila Odinga rejected the election results.
Kibaki requested a meeting with his opponents, but Odinga says he will meet Kibaki only if the president admits he lost the election. "I am ready to have dialogue with the concerned parties once the nation is calm," Kibaki told reporters. Odinga plans to continue to protest the election results.
