The World's Glaciers Are Melting Fast
Glaciers are shrinking at record rates and could disappear within decades, says a new report. Scientists monitored 30 glaciers ice masses that move slowly across land in nine mountain ranges. The 2006 melting rate more than doubled from the year before, according to a United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) study released last week.
"Millions if not billions of people depend directly or indirectly on these natural water storage facilities for drinking water, agriculture, industry and power generation," says Achim Steiner, UNEP's executive director. UNEP supports stricter international laws to reduce air pollution that contributes to global warming and ice loss.
