Spotlight: Ben Buchanan
Harry Potter cast a spell on Ben Buchanan, 12, and helped turn him into a published author! Ben has dyslexia, a learning disorder that makes it hard for him to read and write. But that didn't stop him from eagerly reading all four of J.K. Rowling's books. When he was in the fifth grade, Ben even made a Harry Potter board game, which won a creativity award in a school contest. Copyright laws prohibit him from selling his game, so Ben decided to write about his experience instead. He shares the story of his triumph over dyslexia in My Year with Harry Potter (Lantern Books). He also cowrote Journey to Gameland (Lantern), which tells kids and adults how to create a board game.
Ben says writing the books was "pretty hard and exhausting, but well worth it." He hopes his words will help other kids realize "a learning disability doesn't have to keep you down."
