A Prize that Honors the World's Great Thinkers

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the world's greatest honors. This year the Nobel Committee marked its 100th year by presenting the peace prize to the United Nations and its Secretary General Kofi Annan. The announcement on Friday hailed the U.N.'s efforts to promote world peace and Annan's work on human rights.

The U.N. was created in 1945 to promote peace and understanding among nations. It has grown from its original membership of 51 nations to 189 today. Kofi Annan has been its leader for four years.

The prize, along with Nobels given in literature, economics and the sciences, will be presented on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. Nobel was an inventor who used his fortune to create the prizes. This year's prizes are each worth almost $1 million.

Annan is now trying to organize a campaign against terrorism within the U.N. The prize, he said, "challenges us to do more and do better." Annan added that the award would spur the U.N. to continue to strive for a bigger prize: peace.
