Newcomers Face Old Pros
Sure, the New York Yankees are the defending champions and have won four of the last five World Series. And sure, the Arizona Diamondbacks are newcomers, making their first Series appearance. Still, Yankee manager Joe Torre predicted a hard battle in this matchup. "The Series will be tough for us," Torre said. "We hope we can make it tough for them."
Ace pitching helped the four-year-old Arizona team defeat the Atlanta Braves to become National League champs. Pitching, by Most Valuable Player Andy Pettitte and the Yankees' strong lineup, helped them get past the Seattle Mariners. The Yanks and Diamondbacks had never faced off before Game 1 on Saturday.
