Pakistan's New President

On September 6, lawmakers in Pakistan chose Asif Ali Zardari as the country's new president. Three days later, he was sworn in at the presidential palace in Islamabad, the capital.

Zardari and his wife, Benazir Bhutto, lived outside Pakistan for many years. Bhutto returned to Pakistan last year. She had served as prime minister and hoped to return to power. But she was assassinated last December.

Since its creation in 1947, Pakistan has had a troubled history. Tensions with India have led to conflicts. After the September 11 attacks against the U.S. in 2001, Pakistan agreed to help the U.S. in the war to remove terrorists from neighboring Afghanistan.

Zardari vowed to fight terrorism. "We are in the eye of the storm," he said. "I intend to take that and make it our strength."
