A Roaring Recovery

Grizzly bears have made a big, hairy comeback. Last Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said that about 765 grizzlies live in northwestern Montana. This is more than double what scientists had thought.

That's good news for grizzlies, who have been threatened since 1975.

Over a five-year period, researchers gathered 34,000 samples of hair left by bears rubbing against trees and special traps. The samples helped them determine the bears' numbers, gender, health and habitat.

"The bears are doing really well," said wildlife official Chris Servheen.
