China's Milk Crisis
Health officials in Asia rushed to remove products made with Chinese milk powder last week. The recall came after officials found that milk from Chinese dairies contained melamine (mel-uh-meen). The chemical is used to make plastics and fertilizer. More than 50,000 children in China became sick and four died after eating or drinking milk products.
The crisis became public in September, after a Chinese dairy company recalled its infant formula. China's government has arrested people suspected of adding melamine to milk. It can make milk appear to have more protein.
The problem has reached the U.S. Although White Rabbit candy has been recalled, some was found in Connecticut stores last week. Health officials here are working to keep consumers safe.
