In 1858, Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln ran for U.S. senator from Illinois. They held seven debates. Slavery was the main topic. The meetings captured the nation's attention. Douglas won the Senate seat, but Lincoln won the debates. In 1860, he defeated Douglas to become President.
