Democrats Dominate the House

Last week, Democrats gained their biggest majority in the House of Representatives since the early 1990s. When the new Congress takes office in January, Democrats will hold at least 256 seats. Republicans will have at least 174. Two seats in Louisiana are still up for grabs. The winners will be determined in runoff races in December.

"The American people have called for a new direction. They have called for change," said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Last year, Pelosi became the first woman to hold that important job.

Democrats took 12 seats currently held by Republicans. In Connecticut, Republicans suffered a big upset when Chris Shays was defeated. He has been in office for 22 years. Democrats now hold every House seat from New England.

Still, Republicans enjoyed some moments of victory. Four Democrats in the House lost their races to Republicans.
