Olympic Spotlight: Sarah Hughes
Figure skater Sarah Hughes, 16, is heating up the ice. Last month, the fast-rising star captured a first-place medal at the international competition Skate Canada, beating one of her role models, Michelle Kwan. "I never thought I would have won," she says.
Sarah now has her sights set on an Olympic medal. With the 2002 Winter Games set to begin on February 8, Sarah has a grueling training schedule. She’s on the ice six days a week. Still, the honor student from Great Neck, New York, manages to balance skating with schoolwork. "It takes a lot of discipline," admits Sarah. Her coach, Robin Wagner, is optimistic that Sarah’s discipline and talent make for a winning combination. "She paints a beautiful picture on the ice that really sets her apart," says Wagner.
