Standing Tall on the Field
Oscar Alvarado may be shorter than the other players on his football team, but they all look up to him. The 4-foot-2-inch-tall fullback joined his high school team, the Arvin Bears, this fall after playing recreational football for years. "It was motivating for the kids to see him out there," says coach Edgar Mares.
Oscar, 17, has to practice and play harder than anyone else. "For every four steps I take, they take two," he says jokingly. But the California teen is not intimidated by the bigger players. Says Oscar: "My dad always told me that your heart is the strongest tool you can use."
