New Plans For School
As part of the $787 billion plan to stimulate the economy, President Barack Obama set aside about $50 billion to improve education. Last week, Obama further explained his vision for America's schools.
"Despite resources that are unmatched anywhere in the world, we have let our grades slip, our schools crumble, our teacher quality fall short, and other nations outpace us," Obama said.
The President wants the money to be used to reward good teachers, and to make the school day and school year longer. He also wants to relax rules on charter schools, which use taxpayer money but have different methods of instruction than regular public schools. Obama also wants to improve tests and systems for tracking students' progress.
