Q&A: Jeff Kinney

Cameron Young

Everyone's favorite wimp is back! Dog Days is the fourth book in author Jeff Kinney's hit series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid.It's summer, and Greg Heffley can't wait to play video games all day. But his mom has other plans. Find out who prevails on October 12, when Dog Days arrives in stores.

TFK Kid Reporter Cameron Young spoke to Kinney about his "novels-in-cartoons." The best-selling author also answered questions from TFK readers.

What inspired the series? Christine G., 5th grade, Connecticut

Kinney: I had always wanted to be a newspaper cartoonist, but no one would accept my work. I decided that I had a better chance writing books.

How many more books do you plan to write? Jaeden N., 5th grade, Ohio

Kinney: At least one more. Hopefully, I will have enough creative juice in the tank to do two more after that.

How do you come up with the names for your characters? Nadine N., 5th grade, North Carolina

Kinney: I usually pick by the sound of it. Rowley is not really a regular kid's name; it is a town in Massachusetts.

TFK: Is Greg a good role model?

Kinney: No. In fact, you should do the opposite of everything Greg does.

TFK: Will you ever write books on a different topic?

Kinney: I'll always like to write humor, and I'll always like to write for kids, and I'll always like to use comics. But I probably will take a stab at something else one day.
