A Statue Raises Questions

By Laura C. Girardi

The photograph of three firefighters raising a dusty American flag in the rubble of the World Trade Center on September 11 became a unifying symbol of U.S. pride and strength. But a proposed statue based on the photo became the subject of heated debate.

Last month, the New York City Fire Department unveiled a clay model of a 19-foot, $180,000 statue it planned to build in honor of the city's 343 fallen firefighters. The model depicted one white, one black and one Hispanic firefighter. The three men in the photo are white.

Officials wanted the statue to reflect the many victims of the attack. But many New Yorkers felt the statue's makers were rewriting history.

On Thursday, the fire department announced it will consider other designs for the memorial.
