Only 16 nations competed in the first Winter Olympics in 1924. This year, 85 countries will participate. Here are the countries that have won the most gold medals in Winter Games.

1. Norway: 83 gold medals

2. Soviet Union: 78 gold medals *

3. United States: 59 gold medals

4. Austria: 39 gold medals

5. Finland: 37 gold medals

*The Soviet Union broke up into 15 separate countries, including Russia, in 1991.
