Spotlight: Linda Sue Park
Author Linda Sue Park won her first writing contest when she was 9 years old. Her father still has the prize, a check for $1, framed on his desk. Last month, Park brought home another award. She received the Newbery Medal, the top honor in children’s literature. Her winning book, A Single Shard, is about an orphan in 12th-century Korea who becomes fascinated with a community of pottery makers. Park, who is Korean-American, has written many books set in Korea. Born and raised in the U.S., she decided to learn more about her Korean heritage so she could teach her kids about it. "It was so fascinating, I thought other kids besides my own might be interested."
