Farewell to a Free Spirit
Astrid Lindgren rattled a lot of nerves when she created the freckle-faced, free-spirited Pippi Longstocking in 1945. But the author quickly won over readers with her funny, mischievous tales of the pigtailed orphan-next-door and her pet monkey. Last week, millions of people mourned the death of Lindgren, 94, in her native Sweden. Lindgren’s books have been published in more than 60 languages. "She helped generations of children learn to get to know themselves," said Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson. Her legacy lives on in the fabulously strong and independent Pippi.
