Spotlight: Jim Morris
Science teacher Jim Morris never dreamed that his life story would become a hit movie, The Rookie. Then again, he never dreamed he would become a major league pitcher at age 35. It all started with a promise. In 1999, Morris agreed to try out for the major leagues if the high school baseball team he coached won the district championship. They won, and Morris stuck to his end of the bargain. He pitched 98 m.p.h. fastballs and was signed to the minors. Three months later, Morris was pitching in the majors for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays! He retired from the majors last spring. "It was time to go home and watch my kids grow up," says the father of three.
