Turning Up the Pressure on Iraq

Last week, President George W. Bush continued his efforts to gain support for overthrowing Iraq’s leader, Saddam Hussein (see "Why Iraq?" TFK 9/20). He sent Congress a request for the authority to "use all means," including a military attack, to force Hussein from power if the Iraqi leader won’t get rid of all illegal weapons in his country.

Hussein announced that Iraq would let in United Nations inspectors to look for weapons. Some nations saw this as a good sign. But U.S. officials tried to persuade U.N. members to keep the pressure on Iraq and support a possible military attack. They remember that the last time U.N. inspectors went in, they were not allowed to see some places where they suspected weapons were hidden.

"He’s not deceiving anybody," said Secretary of State Colin Powell after Hussein’s announcement. "It’s a ploy we have seen before."
