A Senator Says Farewell

When Strom Thurmond first became a U.S. Senator in 1954, President George W. Bush was only 8 years old. Thurmond, a Republican from South Carolina, will retire in October, just a few weeks before he turns 100!

Last Thursday, he thanked his fellow Senators. "The U.S. Senate is a special place," he said. The Senate was called to order with a gavel made of marble that was once part of the Capitol building. At the end of the day, it was given to Thurmond.

Thurmond is the oldest person ever to serve in the Senate. He has also served longer than anyone in history.
