TFK Q&A: Judy Blume
WHO Judy Blume
CLAIM TO FAME Award-winning children’s-book author. Her first book in the Fudge series, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, turned 30 this year! Now she has published Double Fudge, the fifth book in the series.
Q How did you get the idea for Fudge?
A At first, I based Fudge on my son Larry when he was a toddler. He sucked four fingers on his left hand and wanted to eat his supper under the table. But then Fudge took on a life of his own.
Q Like Fudge, did Larry swallow a turtle?
A A No, that idea came from a news article about a toddler who did.
Q What happens in Fudge’s latest adventure?
A Fudge is obsessed with money, and the Hatchers meet their long-lost relatives. Fudge discovers he’s not the only Farley Drexel Hatcher in the world.
Q Why did you write Double Fudge?
A When my grandson Elliot was younger, he believed that all you had to do to get money was to put a card into a machine.
Q How will you celebrate Fudge’s 30th birthday?
A I think we should have a birthday party!
