Key Races to Watch This Election Day
President George W. Bush is campaigning hard for the November 5 elections. No, he's not running for office! But this election will decide which political party controls the Senate and the House of Representatives. Bush, a Republican, is traveling the country, giving speeches and raising money to help his party's candidates win.
Democrats control the Senate by one seat; 34 seats are up for election. Republicans control the House by a slim majority. All 435 House seats are up for grabs. If Republicans win control of both houses of Congress, the President would find it easier to get laws passed that he supports. He says he wants "a Congress with which I can work."
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a Democrat, says that his party's chances of keeping control are "slightly better than 50-50." He's urging Democrats to vote.
Many people view this election as a test of Bush's popularity. That's why they are keeping an eye on the Florida governor's race, where the President's younger brother Jeb is fighting to keep his job. The President has visited Florida to help out.
Thirty-six states will choose governors this fall. Women are running in nine of those races.
