Arrests Bring Relief in the Sniper Case
A scary series of deadly shootings in the Washington, D.C., area seemed to come to an end last week. Authorities arrested two suspects, a 41-year-old U.S. Army veteran and a 17-year-old boy, in Maryland on October 23.
In three weeks, 10 people were killed and three badly injured. A gun in the suspects' car matched the one used in 11 of the shootings. "We're positive it's these guys," said one official.
Police identified the arrested man as John Allen Muhammad. The 17-year-old was identified as John Lee Malvo of Jamaica.
Around the nation's capitol, people breathed a sigh of relief. Before the arrests, school had been canceled in some places. The La Plata, Maryland, town council had voted to "strongly discourage" trick-or-treating to keep kids safe at home. On Thursday, Halloween plans were back on track. Said town manager Douglas Miller: "I told my wife to go out and buy some candy."
