When WILLIAM WEGMAN became an artist, he never pictured his career going to the dogs! But then he got a Weimaraner puppy, Man Ray, and it was love at first sight. Wegman, 58, began putting the pooch in his video and photography work. He had no idea that the model mutt would make him famous. "After a while, it became the strongest element of my work," he says, "and I became kind of known for that."
After he got his next dog, Fay Ray, Wegman began photographing his dogs all dressed up. The late Man Ray and Fay Ray, as well as Wegman's six current dogs, have fetched a big following. They appear on PBS's Sesame Street, in videos, paintings and books worldwide. In his latest book, William Wegman Polaroids, the dogs have a different look (see photo, right).
