Spotlight

Poet NIKKI GRIMES is well-versed in issues affecting city kids. The writer grew up in New York City, and many of her poems and stories capture the gritty feeling of urban life. Last week, Grimes won a Coretta Scott King Award from the American Library Association (ALA). The award honors African-American authors of outstanding books for kids and young adults. Grimes won for Bronx Masquerade, a novel for teens featuring the poems of 18 teenagers from the Bronx in New York City. Grimes says the book explores how poetry can "bridge gaps...and create community."

A picture book by Grimes, Talkin' About Bessie, also earned awards last week both for Grimes and for illustrator E.B. Lewis. It tells the story of Elizabeth Coleman, the first African-American female pilot. Read about other prize-winning books at www.ala.org
