What should be built on the World Trade Center site? More than 400 designs were entered in a worldwide contest. Last Tuesday, after hearing from ordinary New Yorkers, officials in charge of rebuilding the site chose two finalists.

Studio Daniel Libeskind of Berlin, Germany, and the Think team of New York will now work with site officials to improve their designs. The officials will choose a winner at the end of this month.

The Think plan features two lacy towers.

Both designs include what would be the tallest structure in the world and a memorial to honor September 11 victims. Each also has museums.

The Libeskind plan features a 1,776-foot pointed tower with hanging gardens near the top. The Think plan includes twin 1,665-foot lacy towers resembling skeletons of the original towers.

Many more decisions remain. Rebuilding the site could take 12 years. "We are now in a position to move forward," said rebuilding official Joseph Seymour.
